NCU Students Visit The Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi

The Department of Applied Sciences organized an educational visit to the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi for MSc Maths, BSc Maths (H) 1st & 2nd Year students during the Induction Programme, on 27 July, 2018. The students explored Library, ISI-Delhi Centre which has a vast collection of reading books/documents/journals in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research. 


The students learnt about the ISI repository of various journals and societies like the American Mathematical Society, IEEE Xplore Digital Library etc. The visit was coordinated by Dr Anshu Malhotra and Dr Seema Thakran.

NCU student wins Mentor’s Award by OSA at Washington, DC (USA)

Nishant Sachdeva, CSE, 3rd Year, attended a workshop, ‘The Innovation School’ by OSA Foundation from 22-26 July 2018, at OSA's global headquarters in Washington, DC USA. His start-up idea was accepted by the OSA Foundation and he was invited to attend this prestigious workshop. Nishant won the ‘Mentors Award’ for the way he pitched his business idea, on 26 July 2018. Nishant was the youngest member to be accepted to represent his college and country which provided him an amazing opportunity of getting such an exposure at an early stage.




The Innovation School was a highly-interactive programme perfect for those seeking to participate in the innovation economy - as an innovator at their company, at a start-up venture or as an entrepreneur. During this four day boot camp, Nishant communicated with industry experts and learnt to identify high potential ideas, validate them using key tactics of customer discovery and evidence, vet them through innovation, experimentation and develop pitches on new solutions, products or ventures. 
       
       
Speaking about his experience Nishant said, “Ideas are a commodity but execution of them is not. In Innovation School I learned how to turn ideas into reality.”

NCU students attend IEEE-IPR Workshop at IIT Delhi

IEEE Delhi Section conducted a workshop on ‘Patent Publishing in India - A Paradigm-shift for Innovation in Academics’ at IIT Delhi on 20 Aug 2018. 13 members of the IEEE-NCU Chapter actively participated in the event and learnt about patenting and its importance on the following topics:

•‘Setting up an IPR Cell’ by Dr Smitha Sahu, Amity University.
•‘In-depth understanding of the patenting process right from filing, publishing to granting’ by Mr Prithipal Singh, India Patent Office.
•‘Tools for Prior-Art search and to determine patentability’ by Mr James Durkin, IP.com

Students were inspired to write more research papers for IEEE-NCU Chapter and received Certificates of Participation. The feedback from students was positive and they were motivated to learn more about patent publishing.

Lecture on ‘Heritage of India’ at the Induction Programme for 1st Year students

A lecture on ‘Heritage of India’ was delivered by Mr Vikramjit Singh Rooprai, Founder of ‘Youth for Heritage Foundation’, dedicated to bring culture closer to the next generation, on 27 July 2018 during the Induction programme for 1st Year students (23 July-3 Aug 2018). His interesting lecture focused on the history and heritage of our country and he quoted some wonderful examples of human evolution. Students enjoyed the session to the extent that they gave a standing ovation to the speaker. The event was coordinated by Ms Jyotika Pruthi, Assistant Professor, and Member Secretary Student Activities & Leadership (SAL) subcommittee.

Report on "Ace your Interview" session

A special session was organized by EECE department on "Ace your Interview" by Ms. Shikha Malhotra, Certified Image Consultant on 8th August 2018. Students of B.Tech Final year ECE attended the lecture. It was a rigorous 2.5 hour session on innovative and unique techniques of facing interviews including proper communication, showcasing strengths and putting forth weaknesses. Live session on body language and mock interviews were conducted by Ms. Shikha. Students found the session very beneficial, especially with placement season starting soon. The feedback of the session was excellent. 
The guest lecture was coordinated by Dr. Rekha Vig.





Orientation FDP for new members of the faculty at NCU

The NorthCap University organized a Faculty Orientation Programme to interact with all new joinees on one common platform on 18 August 2018. The programme acquainted the 18 new faculty members with key aspects of various processes and their functioning in different domains. Members were given a warm welcome by the Registrar, Col Bikram Mohanty (Retd) and, to break the ice, the new members introduced themselves, shared their areas of expertise, interests and hobbies. 

Key University level activities like HR policies, ERP, RDIL, Examinations, Grades, Moderation, online tests etc. were shared by the respective Heads and doubts clarified. Members were motivated to become effective teachers by Prof. Prem Vrat, Pro-Chancellor, and Prof. HB Raghavendra, Vice-Chancellor. The speakers shared their valuable insights on the teaching profession citing personal examples. Emphasis was on providing inspirational and interactive teaching, faculty development and expectations from the faculty. 

Members were apprised of key schemes and faculty specific activities like the Mentoring Scheme, Student Counsellor Scheme, Appraisal Process, Outreach Activities, Internships etc. It was followed by a workshop by eminent academic, Prof. JK Mitra, Professor, Strategy and Organizational Behavior, Former Dean, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi.  
            

The interactive workshop conducted by Prof. Mitra comprised of team building games, group work, building teacher-student relationship, with special focus on innovative pedagogy and new approaches to the teaching-learning experience. The session concluded with Dy Manager (HR) welcoming the new faculty members to the NCU family and wishing them good luck in their future endeavours.

Expert Lecture on ‘How to convert an Idea into Patent’ at NCU

The Dept of EECE organized an expert lecture on ‘How to convert an Idea into Patent’ by Prof BK Sarkar, Project Director, TCS-G Software Pvt Ltd Pune, for all members of the faculty on 14 Aug 2018. The expert himself has 59 patents till date and has sold five patents for 1.40 Cr He enlightened the faculty members about the process of writing and filing of patents and further processes required to publish, sale and develop a patent. It was an interactive session where faculty and research scholars from all the Schools actively participated and clarified their doubts. The lecture was coordinated by Dr Sharda Vashishtha and Ms Kusum Grewal Dangi.


Independence Day Celebrations at The NorthCap University Gurugram

The NorthCap University, Gurugram, celebrated the nation's 72nd Independence Day on 15 Aug 2018, with a lot of enthusiasm and gaiety. The high spirits and patriotic fervour of the faculty, staff, students and children, who attended the function, was visibly evident.  

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof.  HB Raghavendra unfurled the National Flag and took the salute as the smartly turned out contingent of security staff led by the Security Officer, Mr Sanjeev Kumar, marched past the dais. Speaking on the occasion Prof. Raghavendra greeted all faculty members, students and staff members including their families. While conveying his good wishes, he reminded everyone of the supreme sacrifices made by several leaders political and non-political in securing independence for our country. 


Prof. Raghavendra said, “On this auspicious day I also take this opportunity to make our students, faculty and staff of NCU aware of our next vision as a University. As you already know that we are ranked amongst the 200 universities in the recent survey of NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) of MHRD, Govt. of India. While I appreciate the hard work of all my faculty, staff and students behind this, next year we must strive to be within 100. We have to educate our students with the latest technologies by integrating our curriculum with industry practices. I also expect all our teachers to become facilitators in the overall development of each student”.   



A cultural programme by the students highlighted sacrifice and patriotism for the country. The celebrations were followed by high tea for all.

Workshop on ETABS Software organized by Dept of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NCU

The Dept of CEE organized a workshop on ETABS Software in collaboration with EXPONIQ Engineering Services Pvt Ltd for BTech, 3rdYear students on 13 Aug 2018. The module of software E-Tabs serves as a component of context learning in the courses of Structural Analysis - II and Design of Steel Structures, learnt by students in the current semester. ETABS is the ultimate integrated software package for the structural analysis and design of buildings. 

Latest ETABS offers unmatched 3D object-based modeling and visualization tools, blazingly fast linear and nonlinear analytical power, sophisticated and comprehensive design capabilities for a wide-range of materials, and insightful graphic displays, reports, and schematic drawings that allow users to quickly and easily decipher and understand analysis and design results. The session gave hands on experience to the students including practice sessions of different modules of the software.

Inauguration of Tinkering Lab at NCU

Tinkering Lab is an area where innovative minds can play with technology. It is based on the values of creativity, critical thinking, innovation and hands-on experience. It is a collaborative work area packed with components, equipment, tools and software. Students of any discipline can together give shape to their new ideas. They can design, create and engineer prototypes, new products etc.


The Tinkering Lab was inaugurated by Prof. BK Kuthiala, Chairperson Haryana Higher Education Council, Govt of Haryana, during the Orientation Programme on 21 July 2018. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Prem Vrat; Vice-Chancellor, Prof. HB Raghavendra; Registrar, Col Bikram Mohanty (Retd); Deans and HoDs of all Schools/departments and faculty members. A brief presentation about the Tinkering Lab was made by Dr Vandana Khanna, Dr Yogita and Ms Anuradha accompanied the guests around the lab and student volunteers explained the working of the projects in the lab. Some of the award-winning projects were on display to motivate students to work beyond the boundaries of the curriculum. Prof. Kuthiala was impressed by the type of work done by students of  The NorthCap University.

Partnership Agreement between The NorthCap University and MAGES Institute of Excellence, Singapore

The NorthCap University signed a Partnership Agreement with MAGES Institute of Excellence, Singapore, both leading educational institutions in their respective fields, on 8 Aug 2018.  Under this agreement MAGES Institute of Excellence will provide guidance and training in new technological areas like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics and other emerging areas to students and faculty at NCU. They will also suggest courses in newer technologies which can be embed in the BTech programmes, especially related to CSE & ECE. A roadmap is being jointly worked out under the leadership of Prof. Swaran Ahuja, Dean Academics, and likely to be completed by November 2018. 


The Agreement was signed by Ms Neeru Bahl, CEO, MAGES Institute of Excellence and Prof. HB Raghavendra, Vice-Chancellor, for a period of five years. Ms Kathy Lai, Dy CEO, Enterprise Singapore;  Mr Ravi Kant Bahl, Director, MAGES Institute of Excellence and Shri  V Daulet Singh, Hon’ble Chancellor, The NorthCap University were also present at the occasion. With this Agreement both parties bring on board their immense strengths, committing to raising standards in education and preparing the next generation of students for jobs of the future.

MAGES Institute of Excellence is a private education institution based out of Singapore which provides high quality tertiary level coaching with rapidly developing media, animation and gaming industries and aims at delivering a complete learning experience in Game Designing technology featuring programmes. MAGES Institute of Excellence recently conducted a six week summer internship programme for NCU’s Final-year students from 4 June to 13 July 2018, which was highly appreciated by all.

Alumnus shares insights on Project Based Learning

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an interaction with Alumnus Mr Naveen Chauhan, (Class of 2018), Andritz Hydro Ltd, Faridabad, on the topic ‘Project Based Learning’ during the Induction Programme for 1st Year students (ME) on 3 August 2018. Mr Naveen shared his learning experiences while pursuing BTech at NCU and discussed the benefits of working on projects while studying theoretical concepts. He also talked about the projects that he completed as an active member of NCU’s Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE), which was followed by an interactive session which was coordinated by Mr Anmol Bhatia and Mr Jag Parvesh Dahiya.

Club and Society fest at NCU

Club and Society Fest was organized especially for 1st Year students at The NorthCap University on 10 August 2018. Registration counters were set up by the following Professional Societies: Computer Society of India, ACM, SPIE, IEEE, ISHARE, ASQ, SAE, ASCE, SPACE, IRSC Student Chapter, OSA Student Chapter and Enactus-NCU. The fest created awareness about the various professional societies active in the University and the activities/events organized by them, throughout the year. 


The fest provided students a common platform to know about various reputed societies, their events and activities like seminar, expert lectures, workshops, projects, industrial visits, job junctions etc.  and register themselves at the site. The fest was a success as it disseminated detailed information about societies and motivated a good number of students to be a part of them.

Alumnus shares prospects and career options after BTech

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an interaction with Alumnus Ms Piyushi Yadav (Class of 2017), JTEKT Sona Automotive India Ltd, on the topic ‘Prospects and Career options after BTech’ during the Induction Programme for 1st Year students (ME) on 27 July 2018. Ms Piyushi is part of the product development team in the Production Control Department. She shared her experiences of projects that she handled and also discussed various prospects and career options after completing BTech in Mechanical Engineering. Ms Piyushi has agreed to mentor students in their project work. The session was coordinated by Mr Anmol Bhatia and Mr Jag Parvesh Dahiya.

Exuding rhythm and artistic flow of beats the team ‘Morphinated’ promoted the culture of evolving dance styles for the students of 1st Year on 3 Aug 2018 during the Induction Programme for freshers. Their performance enthralled the students and they were motivated to join the Dance club of NCU.

First-year students get insight into industrial working environment

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an industry visit for 1st Year students (ME) to Prem Motors Pvt Ltd during the Induction Programme, on 26 July 2018. The students saw the various processes for the repairing and maintenance of automobiles. They also gained knowledge about different automobile auxiliaries like differential gears, brakes etc. The students visited the paint shop and also saw the process of painting of automobiles. The visit was coordinated by Mr Anmol Bhatia, Mr Jag Parvesh Dahiya and Mr Ravinder Yadav.

Celebration of Road Safety Week at NCU

A road safety awareness campaign was organized from 1-7 Aug 2018 at NCU under advice of the Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Service Authority, Gurugram. Banners on Road Safety Awareness were displayed at several places in and around the University. A Quiz was conducted to test the awareness level of students regarding road safety, on 4 Aug 2018. More than 150 students of all the departments took the quiz test and the average marks scored by them were 60%. A lecture on ‘Road Safety Awareness’ was delivered by Dr Rohit Singh Lather, Associate Professor, Dept of ME on 6 Aug 2018. The talk was informative and supported with authentic road accident statistics. A short skit was presented by NCU’s Abhimanch Society to sensitize drivers about various aspects of road safety, on 6 Aug 2018.



A Road Safety Awareness March was conducted in the University’s neighbourhood and Sect 23-A Market, Gurugram, on 7 Aug 2018. Students carried banners, raised slogans and distributed pamphlets on road safety to drivers and the general public on the road. Thereafter, all students, faculty and staff of the University took an oath committing to being a safe driver.


Rtn Ranjan Dhingra talks to students about ‘Service to Society’

As part of the Induction Programme, Rtn Ranjan Dhingra, Former District Governor of Rotary International was invited to address the students on the topic ‘Service to Society’ on 24 July 2018. An engineer by profession and a successful entrepreneur, he was adjudged as the ‘Best Outstanding President’ of the year in the District and has received many awards.



Rtn Ranjan Dhingra emphasized that success in life is important but being a part of society entails a moral obligation to give back to the society also. He drew analogies from stories of many successful persons in history including Alexander the Great, who built a large empire, yet died empty-handed. He encouraged students to try and bring a ‘smile’ on at least one person’s face, through their actions. Everyone should aspire to be an agent of social change and should not hesitate to take up new initiatives.

The NorthCap University (NCU), apart from aspiring for academic excellence, has always been promoting the values and wisdom embodied in the Indian heritage amongst the youth, with a hope that these will influence their way of life and inspire them to become a better human being. The Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, (SPIC MACAY), is a movement that promotes Indian classical music, Indian classical dance, and other aspects of Indian culture.


As a part of the Induction Programme for 1st Year students, volunteers Biswaksen Panda and Yashika of the SPIC MACAY NCU Chapter shared the platform with the other NCU clubs and societies and presented the importance and values embedded in the movement on 3 Aug 2018. They highlighted the background, objectives and activities of the Society followed by a short documentary on the various past events of the Chapter including the motivating words of some of the alumni who have been an integral part of the society. The volunteers were dressed in different traditional costumes to promote the diverse cultures in our country and encouraged the freshers to be a part of this Society and learn more about Indian culture and traditions.

Emerging Technologies on Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality for First Year Computer Science and Electronics & Communications Engineering Departments

The latest technology coming up in today’s world is Augmented (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). MAGES Studio, Singapore gave a presentation on these newer technologies on 3 August 2018, during the 10 day Induction Programme comprising of various technical and non-technical activities organized for 1st Year students from 23 July to 3 Aug 2018.



NCU’s 3rd and 4th Year BTech, CSE and ECE students recently underwent a six week summer internship during June-July 2018 mastering concepts of Game Development and learning how to work with core game engines such as Unity and Unreal. Their remarkable, unique and relevant solutions using cutting edge AR and VR technology were shown to the 1st Year students during the presentation.



Haryana Police create awareness about mobile app ‘Durga Shakti’

During the Road Safety Week organized at NCU from 1-7 Aug 2018, to raise awareness about new safety measures introduced for women, a team from Haryana Police, Gurugram, visited the University on 6 August 2018. They updated girl students and lady staff members about Govt of Haryana’s recently launched mobile app ‘Durga Shakti’ by Haryana Police for the safety of women. They demonstrated the procedure for downloading the app and using it in case of emergency.




Talking about the effectiveness of ‘Durga Shakti’, Inspector Vikram Singh said that the app will connect to the closest police station as well as the Police Headquarters and this will enable women to get immediate help from the police. The aim of this app is to reduce the response time of the police in providing help to women in distress. Through this app the police will receive the distress message in a few seconds and will be able to provide help in a few minutes. Even if the caller is unable to speak, just on receiving the call the police will be able to trace the location of the caller and respond in a few minutes. The app aims to reduce crime against women and ensure their safety.

Performance by Encore Music Society at the Induction Programme 2018

Art and Music have always been an integral part of academic life at NCU. Apart from various value-added programmes, the University proactively facilitates extracurricular activities for students to recognise their talent and hone their skills in the areas of art and music also. The ‘Encore Music Society’ of the University is one such platform for students to learn music and excel in whatever field of music they are interested in. The Society promotes music starting from basic knowledge to innovations leading to betterment of a student’s intellect, discipline, emotional quotient and expression of one’s identity and personality.



The Induction Programme (23 July to 3 Aug 2018) for 1st Year students provided a platform on 3 Aug 2018 for various clubs and societies of the University to showcase their activities before the new entrants and encourage them to be a part of these co-curricular and extracurricular activities. During the programme, a team of 20 members of the Encore Music Society gave a beautiful rendition of a Bollywood medley and rap. Addressing the freshers, one of the members, Aditi Jain, gave a brief introduction about the Society and encouraged the new students to be a part of it and contribute meaningfully by exhibiting their varied inherent musical interests and talents.




Enactus Society at the Induction Programme for 1st Year students

Members of the Enactus Society made a presentation about its activities, for the benefit of the community, to 1st Year students on 3 Aug 2018 during the Induction Programme for the freshers from 23 July to 3 Aug 2018. Students gained information about the Society’s activities for the welfare of the underprivileged such as initiating startups for them thereby empowering them to be entrepreneurs.


The Enactus Society received an overwhelming response from the students who interacted with its student representatives and learnt more about its activities such as the project of making newspaper pencils by the differently abled. They applauded these efforts of the Enactus Society and wanted to know the procedure for becoming a part of it. Several students filled up the offline forms. The online forms have been circulated among all 1st Year students of all the departments for getting a good mix of applicants for the Society. Enactus members dressed in Enactus T-shirts attracted the immediate attention of the freshers.

Justice M Karpaga Vinayagam delivers a lecture on ‘Constitution of India and Criminal Law’

Hon’ble Mr Justice M Karpaga Vinayagam, former Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and Ex-Chairperson of Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, Petroleum and Natural Gas, New Delhi, delivered a lecture on ‘Constitution of India and Criminal Law’ on 3 Aug 2018, during the Induction Programme for 1st Year students. Justice Vinayagam was the first judge in the country to deliver a judgment banning tinted glasses in vehicles, following a gang rape of a college girl in a vehicle having such glasses.



From his personal experience he citied many instances to show how hard work brought success in his professional life. He said that law alone cannot change society and expressed dismay about the fact that despite changes made in the Law after the ‘Nirvbhaya’ case, rapes have not come down. He advised students to be honest about their jobs, build their characters and aspire to become responsible citizens of the country.

IEEE Society at the Induction Programme for 1st Year students

Members of the IEEE Society made a presentation about the activities, role and benefits of the Society to 1st Year students on 3 Aug 2018 during the Induction Programme organized at NCU for the freshers from 23 July to 3 Aug 2018. Students gained information about the Society, how it would enhance their knowledge and help in building their careers. Over 30 freshers registered for membership of the Society on the same day, which was appreciated by the office bearers of the Society.
