Pumping life into ideas – NCU’s Incubation Centre

Sushmita Biswal Waraich
(Ph.D, Delhi University)
School of Management

“Breathing life into …. something.” How is that possible? Does it require a miracle? May be it is possible only for God to accomplish? Not human beings you think?

You’ve got another “think” coming – the human minds with technology as enabler can also do wonders. More than an enabler, “nurturance/ support” does bigger wonders. Some amount of hand-holding could just save someone.

Here, bringing in a very stark analogy, a pre-mature baby needs some help to be able to survive in this world. Without this support mechanism, the newborn may not survive. Thanks to the medical world, which brought in “incubators” to save these babies.

Similarly, a great idea might not get to see the light of the day, if it does not get the necessary support. Now, why should this idea be provided support? The answer lies in the fact that the idea could transform the society. Not all ideas might have the potential, but the ones that do, should not be allowed to perish.

Initially, an academic environment should be encouraged which is conducive to develop new ideas/ businesses. Subsequently, when a good idea emerges (which looks viable in terms of solving a societal problem as well as commercially) it might need support, in order to be taken forward. This is where educational institutions could pitch in by providing the necessary support. If an idea is allowed to die down, it could be a loss for the society/economy.

With the stress on startups, it is all the more felt that educational institutions are no less stakeholders than the government, corporate, funding agencies etc. They can provide the start-ups/ young potential entrepreneurs with the necessary hand-holding, during the early stages of development.

An innovative idea is more precious than gold and diamond especially when it comes to economic development. The NorthCap University, Gurugram, houses the Master Jagannath Centre of Excellence and Incubation (MJCEI). It is established with the objective to enhance research and innovation among students and faculty members, primarily in the field of software products and apps, though not limited to these domains only. NCU-MJCEI provides facilities like infrastructure/space, seed funding, mentoring, learning resources, networking facilities, software and hardware facilities..

With the above, it will definitely be motivating for the NorthCapians to come up with new ideas, experiment and take them to the market. Especially for the Computer Science Engineering students, though the other branches can also avail the necessary support, MJCEI could be a big leap from NCU campus to the world of business/entrepreneurs. The students and faculty members of NCU can give wings to their ideas through MJCEI.
