PURSUING A LAW DEGREE FROM REPUTED LAW COLLEGES

The study of laws, on condition they are good laws, is unrivalled in its ability to improve students                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    – Plato

Law, legal education and development have become inter-related concepts in modern developing societies which are struggling to develop into social welfare states and are seeking to ameliorate the socio-economic condition of the people by peaceful means. The same is true for India. It is the crucial function of legal education to produce lawyers with a social vision in a developing country like India. However, the legal education, in modern times is not confined to production of practicing lawyers alone. Today its scope and ambit has widened enough and its impact is felt in every sphere of human life. The law being a tool for the social engineering, legal education can be regarded as an instrument for the social design.

Martin Luther King Jr. once observed that “Injustice anywhere is threat to justice everywhere”. The statement contemplates that the lawyers and person who acquire legal education are having foremost duty on their shoulders to spread the awareness among the masses about their rights and to protect them from oppression.

Now it becomes extremely desirable that we should impart and inculcate better quality of legal education among the law students so that they can imbibe skills and ability to become the protector of people’s rights by spreading awareness amongst the masses.

The Bar Council of India

The Bar Council of India, the present regulatory body who makes rules and regulation for the promotion of legal education in India has also strengthened the system by imposing stringent measures to check and account for the credibility of professionals both during study and practice. Law degrees are given and conferred in terms of Advocates Act, 1961 which authorizes BCI to govern and regulate the conduct for both legal education and profession. Universities, Law Institutes, affiliated Colleges and National Law Schools have to confine themselves to the rules and standards prescribed by the BCI for courses of study, infrastructure requirements, eligibility for admission and are responsible for the promotion of legal studies in India. Traditionally, legal education was imparted as a three years graduate degree(unitary) after completion of Bachelor’s degree other but with increasing strength and honour attached to this profession, an Integrated Five-Year Law Program  was introduced by BCI in 1982 provided after 12th Standard as an alternative to three year course so that law aspirants can directly enrol in universities. Law being an interdisciplinary profession, students have the varied option to club the law courses with Management, Arts and Commerce depending in their area of interest.

In the present scenario, if we look at the legal education system in India, we have created an infrastructure for imparting better legal education among law students. Like IIM’s and IIT’s, which aims at providing exceptionally sound education atmosphere, we are developing National Law Universities and other private Universities in India which have already begun the race for the best college for law in India. These institutions make constant endeavour to uplift Indian legal education system.

Ms Srishty Banerjee

Law education is a constructive way to prepare not only for specific legal careers, but for abundant range of different professional roles and yes undeniably for life in general. Law effects round about every possible area of human life, touching upon all the issues like economics, politics, environment, human rights, international relations, business and trade. Conventionally, legal education in India consisted of a three- year undergraduate program and it was in mid 80s when five- year undergraduate programme was also introduced in the country there by combining law with arts, science, commerce and management paving novelty, innovation and freshness to law studies.Legal education plays an imperative role in developing lawyers who work as social engineers and put their endeavour in the direction of nation building.

The Northcap University “The Bridge between academic excellence and professional acumen” has been ranked as 82nd out of 233 Universities all over India and 17th amongst all private universities and 4th in all Private Universities in North India in the first ever NIRF Ranking by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The University besides providing quality education in typical engineering courses such as Mechanical, Computer Science, Electronics and Civil,it has also started contributing in Nation’s development in the field of social engineering when School of Law founded in the year of 2010 and introduced BBA.LL.B (Hons.)program. This stream aspires to create a distinguish class of Corporate Lawyers who would not only identify with the intricacies business but because of amalgamation of business administration and law studies students are equally buff up in Corporate Laws and Regulatory Affairs. BBA-LLB program is running in more than twenty Universities/Colleges/Institutes in Delhi/NCR.The distinctiveness of the NorthCap University is that it is the first University which introduced BBA-LLB (Hons.) course in Delhi/NCR with a high quality and standard of education.Apparently, Global Human Resource Development Centre Survey (April 2016) has ranked the School of Law, the NorthCap University, as 5th Rank in Category of ‘Eminence’ and 2nd Rank in Northern Region which is in fact just the beginning of excellence.NCU, School of Law, courses are purposely designed with the pace of latest development in the field of legal studies and the distinctiveness is that it offers specialisation in Constitutional Law and Corporate Law which makes it BBA.LL.B(Hons). It provides an integrated perceptive of the interrelationship of Management Studies and Legal Studies. Through Honours it is intended that it is an advanced academic course because it involves the learning of BBA and Law courses both in profundity. In School of Law, NCU, knowledge of law is imparted by teaching- learning process which is supplemented by a variety of skills, such as advocacy, legal writing, research, mooting and internship in all semesters. Law Colleges in Haryana

We believe that the journey of getting a dream job at any law firm or pursuing legal practice and becoming a well established lawyer begins only after legal education. But this journey starts from the very first day, on which a student after completing secondary education decides to pursue law as a career. So every student must plan this journey from the first day and selection of best law school and integrated 5 years law degree programme is vital for this. To support my view I would like to quote few words of Erin Andrews who has said “Success doesn’t happen overnight. Keep your eye on the prize and don’t look back”.

1. Law School Selection

Students must prepare for CLAT and LSAT Examination to get enrolled in top National Law Universities. I have noticed most of the students write competitive exams without even knowing the outlines of the Syllabi of these competitive exams. Without preparation students do not get admissions in desired Law schools.

2. Appropriate Course Curriculum

Gone are the days, where we had traditional dual degree integrated 5 years BA-LLB degree and this was the only option available for law students to pursue. Now with the changing paradigms of legal education, we have other specialisations merged with law like BBA-LLB, BBA-LLB (Hons.), B.Tech-LLB, BSc-LLB etc. These degree programmes have been designed to cater the needs of the industry. Many leading Universities have excelled in imparting these specialised programmes. For instance, BBA-LLB (Hons.) is the flagship programme of Law School at The NorthCap University, Gurgaon which is top & only private university in Haryana in the NIRF (MHRD, Govt. of India) ranking. Likewise UPES, Dehradun offers B.Tech-LLB in energy laws. Though, I may not suggest Law programme with B.Tech./ B.Sc., because the employment prospects in the legal industry with respect to engineering and science is currently very limited and on the other hand BBA-LLB (Hons.) is highly desired and the demand is growing.
