Externship in National Physical Laboratory, Delhi

Faculty members Dr K Mathiyazhagan and Dr Arjyajyoti Goswami, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, were on externship in the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), New Delhi from 12-13 December 2017. They visited the Acoustics and Vibrations laboratory to see the facilities available and the type of work carried out by NPL. The lab is equipped with advanced instrumentation for measurement of sound, vibration and calibration of electro-acoustic equipments such as Microphone Calibration System, Standard & Measurement Accelerometers etc. The lab provides calibration, testing services and technical advisory consultancy to various industries and institutions of the country.

Different kinds of live problems handled by the Acoustics and Vibrations Laboratory such as noise isolation problems in aircrafts and buildings etc. were discussed and the areas in which students can work at NPL were also explored. NPL has an existing system in which students from different universities spend a semester at NPL to work on their major thesis. Many students are currently working at NPL under this scheme. Dr Garg, Sr Scientist, Acoustics and Vibration Standards, NPL, expressed his interest in taking two students from NCU under this scheme. The team also discussed the possibilities of joint projects between NPL and NCU.
