Health Issues - A TALK BY DR ALKA


On Sat, 18 Apr 2015 a talk was given by Dr. Alka: OB and GYNE - Civil Hospital, Gurgaon, on Dysmenorrhea under the campaign “My Freedom”. The talk was attended by female faculty and staff in the Seminar Room. The doctor covered various aspects including symptoms, precautions and treatment of Dysmenorrhea. Menstruation is normal bleeding from vagina that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle. The cramps are caused by tightening (contractions) of the uterus (which is a muscle) by a chemical called prostaglandin. Severe menstrual pain is called dysmenorrhea. It comprises of severe abdominal cramps during periods especially in teenage girls during puberty. Mostly teens with cramps do not have any disease. In older women, the pain can be a symptom of diseases like uterine fibroids. Some over the counter medicines are available in the market to reduce the pain. Hormonal pills ( birth control pills) are useful to regulate your menstrual cycle and minimize pain. The talk was concluded with a Q/A session where queries of female staff were resolved by the doctor.
