“Smart Materials and Shape Memory Alloys” an emerging area in Mechanical Engineering

Dr Ritwik Basu
The Northcap University, Gurgaon

One of the major breakthroughs in the world of materials and manufacturing is the development of smart materials in last two decades. These are materials which exhibit a change in some property with change in the temperature, pressure, stress, magnetic or electrical field. These comprise of a variety of materials which include piezoelectric, shape memory materials, magnetostrictive, pH-sensitive polymers, halochromic materials, ferrofluid, photomechanical materials and many more. Of all these different materials shape memory alloys find the widest applications to date.

Shape memory alloys exhibit two very important properties; shape memory effect(SME) and the pseudo elasticity (PE). SME is the property in which a material when cooled below a critical temperature causesa phase transformation from high temperature phase austenite to a low temperature phase martensite. Deforming the material in the low temperature condition and then reheating back causes the material to regain the high temperature shape and phase. It is very easy to deform the material in the martensitic condition Pseudo-elasticity is the property in which the material undergoes phase transformation from austenite to martensite upon application of stress i.e. the material exhibit softening with increased stress. The high temperature equilibrium phase and shape is restored when the applied stress is withdrawn. Both shape memory and pseudo elasticity isexploited for a large number of products and applications. These include actuators used in aircrafts, eye-glass frames, cardio-vascular stents, dental braces etc.

Wanna to do Engineering……………..?????????

Hi Guys, Passed 12th with PCM? Want to do Engineering?? Oh!!! Confused?? Which branch? ECE, CSE, Mechanical, Civil, IT. Mechanical, civil, yes these are quite clear generally as you can visualize the things related to it. But what about CSE, IT, and ECE? A big question.

Isn’t the situation same as it were when you had to opt for PCM or PCB after your 10th? At that time also you would have taken opinions from your elders and your parents must have taken advices from their friends, colleagues etc etc. One answer was definitely “ whatever is your interest, opt for that or in which subject you have scored more Biology or Maths opt for that” Again question is to you and you must have thought that if I would be clear where I have had my interest then why I am asking you. Was it like this? But finally with lots of advices and all, you chose for PCM and completed your 12th.

What happened!!! The same type of scenario is in front of you again. Again you need guidance to choose the branch as you don’t know where you will find your interest. Whether you would be able to get a job or not. Yes, you can be employable after 4 years or even after 3.yrs you can have a job offer in your hand with a good salary package. At least enough you wouldn’t feel low while telling someone your LPA. Looking Unbelievable????? But the answer is “NO”. Its true, only you need to be dedicated and focused towards it.

What about Electronics?? You must be thinking “No No... Every other person is saying that Electronics market is going down, how I will get a job in this area and all. But if it so, then how you are experiencing daily new advanced electronic gadgets in the market. Whether it may be an apple i6 phone, laptop with i7 processor inside, i-pads, refrigerators with convertible modes, LED TVs with full Wi-Fi connectivity, Wow!! You can watch your favorite show “Friends” or “Permanent roommates” on youtube videos on your big screen.

It’s not a joke. It’s all electronics playing behind it.  Have you ever opened an electronic device, what’s inside??  Must be seeing some printed circuit board, very small IC (a chip), some connectivity on board, but not with electrical wires, few very thin lines are running on board carrying millions of electrons. A full picture is running inside it and you are enjoying the show.

Curious??? How it’s all happening?  Now left on you, choice is yours….. Moreover its not only limited to this, It’s a big world …..Want to be part of it??….. You’re welcome to my next blog…

Engineering Colleges and the Washington Accord

Prof. S. Krishnamoorthi
Professor
Dept of Civil Engineering
The NorthCap University, Gurgaon

Hi, my dear engineering aspirants! Finally you have made the decision to get your degree in engineering. Definitely one or more factors like a natural gift, life improvements, family advice, peer teachers, social need, role models, and career fairs would have helped you to take the decision. I hope you do not belong to the category of students who are not interested to gain knowledge and skills but only in marks, degree or a job. If you are one of them, you may stop reading further. For the rest, thank you for reading on.

Let me first introduce you to the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the Washington Accord (WA). The National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India is an autonomous body with the objective of Assurance of Quality in engineering degree programs offered by various engineering colleges through the mechanism of accreditation.

The Washington Accord is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. It recognizes the substantial equivalency of programs accredited by those bodies and recommends that graduates of such accredited programs may become eligible for entry to the practice of engineering in member countries.

NBA, India has been a signatory (17th member) of the Washington Accord since 2014. After this, NBA has introduced a new process, parameters and criteria for accreditation engineering degree programs. These are in line with the best international practices and oriented to assess the outcomes of the program.

NBA has divided the engineering colleges in to two tiers. Tier 1 and Tier II. Tier I colleges are those with autonomy to review the content of curriculum and make changes as a result of recommendations from accreditation visits. Tier II colleges are those which are affiliated to a university and thus do not have academic freedom.

According to NBA, Tier I colleges only will be covered under Washington Accord and The NorthCap University (NCU) comes under Tier I.

Next I will highlight on the changing role of engineering colleges to meet out the challenges posed by the NBA and the WA. It is really a great challenge for engineering colleges to offer high quality undergraduate degree program in engineering under the new guidelines for accreditation. For getting accreditation by the NBA, every engineering college, for each of its undergraduate degree program in engineering, should have Program Educational Objectives(PEOs),Program Outcomes(POs),well-structured curriculum having courses in basic sciences, engineering arts and sciences, humanities, management, Program core, program elective, open elective and foreign language elective. Each course will have. Course Educational Objectives (CEOs) and Course Outcomes(COs),well qualified and experienced faculty and support staff to deliver the curriculum,, laboratory, computer and library infrastructure, pedagogy in teaching-learning process, evaluation system, industry interaction, involvement of stakeholders at various stages, facilities for co-curricular and extra- curricular activities, equal weightage for teaching and research and a system for assessment of attainment of the PEOs, POs and COs and to take corrective actions depending upon the result. It should be capable of developing technical knowledge, technical skills and soft skills (communication, personality, environmental and ethical).

Facilities should be provided for the students to develop their talents in co-curricular and extra- curricular activities. Students should be motivated to take part in National level design competitions and examinations like GATE.

To enhance the placement opportunities, students should be exposed to value added courses, up-dating of practical knowledge through industry interaction, specialized workshops and  pre-placement interview techniques.

The NorthCap University has not only everything that an engineering college should aspire towards striving to keep inspiring.

After six years of track record as a University, NCU has obtained 82nd rank out of 247 universities from all over India and secured top and only private university in Haryana and Delhi/NCR in the National Institutional Ranking Framework carried out by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 2016, in fact the only Private University in Top 100 in Delhi/NCR and Haryana.

The NorthCap University,Gurgaon

Though  legal education in India has  changed its shape from good to  best, yet the current decade is  continuously wrapping its face from all around, i.e., from good to bad,  bad to worse,  bad to good and best to excellent. As law has emerged as one of the most promising arenas in professionalizing students, this decade has seen a number of law schools being run as producer of lawyers on papers as well as lawyers crossing the legal height in performance. In the present age the parents charged with ambitions, and the aspirants charged with change, starts to seek at various dimensions, as to which law school should they join, to realize the goal and destination of life?

Moreover, all the Law Schools imparting legal education are theoretically understood as having a role in teaching, training and research & also having nexus with the object of legal education. An institution is considered to be delivering an excellent output when it imparts Legal education, amalgamating all the above mentioned elements in such a manner that by the time a student get his law degree, he may need no further training.  Thus, we can say that in order to be a claimant of the premiership in Law Schools, one has to establish calculatively the above three elements.
